ABOUT THE INSPECTION

The purpose of this inspection is to assure government, parents and the public of the quality and standard of day care. When making judgements, inspectors have regard to how well the provider meets the National Standards for under Eights Day Care and Childminding. A list of these is attached. The report identifies strengths and areas for improvement.

This inspection report must be made available to all parents.

Information about the setting

Winyates Playgroup is a full day care provision based in a converted shop within the Winyates Shopping Centre, Redditch. It operates in one room. A maximum of 26 children may attend at any one time. The group is open each weekday from 08:50 to 14:50 term time only. The children have access to a small, enclosed, outside area.

There are currently 57 children on roll. Of these 17 receive funding for nursery education. The nursery has experience of caring for children with special needs.

The group employs eight staff. Three staff hold appropriate early years qualifications and work each day. The remaining staff are assistants and all work part time.

How good is the Day Care?

Winyates Playgroup provides satisfactory care for children. Staff provide a welcoming environment for both children and staff.

There is a very good range of toys and equipment available for the children, but there is limited storage within the room. Staff do ensure that toys and equipment are rotated regularly. Staff have developed short medium and long term plans and weekly activities are displayed. Staff do not structure the day and encourage children to have maximum independence and free choice. All of the storage within the room is easy for the children to access. Staff are actively involved with the children's play and have a good awareness of individual children's needs. They are considerate and provide 1:1 care for children who require it.

Staff are aware of health and safety issues and good hygiene practices were observed but the risk assessment requires completing and recording. Children are provided with free access to water at all times and a snack. Parents provide packed lunches for children. Lunch is a social occasion and conversation and discussion is actively encouraged. On the whole children's behaviour is good and staff are consistent and gentle in their approach to them.

There are good relationships with parents and their comments on the group included; committed and caring staff, friendly, flexible, children enjoy attending and children's individual needs are recognised and children's progress is good. Most documentation and paperwork is completed and parents requests and individual children's needs recorded. The following paperwork requires up dating; the registers need to include the times of arrival and departure of children and staff, medication requests need to include the length of time medication is to be administered for and procedures to be followed, should allegations be made about a member of staff, are included on the child protection register. The child protection policy should also be shared with parents.
